Kalymnians are proud of their island and culture. They are hospitable, hard working and outward looking, with a great joie de vivre and interest in politics and people.
By their own admission, a history of conflict, tragedy and battle for survival has also left its mark and people can be stubborn and inclined to jealousy, especially in business.
Male machismo is prized but women are seen as strong and inheritance of property is through the female line. When a couple marry, they live close to the woman’s family, often in a house provided by her parents. Family ties are very strong.
Festivals - both religious and political - mark the rhythm of life. The biggest is Easter, with a moving ‘funeral’ procession and dynamite thrown for celebratory explosions from the hills.
Tradition and custom are fiercely maintained but there is also a drive to be 'modern'.
Strong links are kept with Kalymnian communities abroad, especially Tarpon Springs, Florida, USA and Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia.
